Founded in 1866, Fort Buford is best known as the site of Sioux Chief Sitting Bull's surrender in 1881. The site is at the convergence of the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers, about 25 miles southwest of Williston, and nearby attractions include the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center and the Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site. Three original buildings from the fort remain, including a stone powder magazine and the field officer's quarters, which has exhibits tracing frontier military history featuring the role of Fort Buford in Dakota Territory's history.
Open mid-May - mid-Sep: daily, 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.; mid-Sep - mid-May: Mon. - Fri. by appointment only.
Adults $5; Children $2.50. Includes admission to Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center.
