Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site served as a primary fur trading post for a good part of the mid-19th century, offering a shelter and meeting site where Native American trappers and traders from farther east could barter for wares and goods. Though the original fort long ago turned to rubble, it has been partially reconstructed to give a sense of life out in the American frontier. Visit the various buildings which offer different historical artifacts as well as recreated spaces that look like they were pulled straight out of the original fort, offering an in-depth look at the trading post's inhabitants and lifestyles. Take the mile hike to the Bodmer Overlook where the painting of the Assiniboine at Fort Union was created by artist Kris Bodmer in the 1830s. The site sits right on the Montana state border, about 30 miles by car southwest of the town of Williston.
